Global Sanitation Context
Various sanitation technologies are utilized globally, each varying in cost, suitability, adaptability, and user satisfaction. In Kenya, on-site sanitation is predominant, with technologies ranging from septic tanks to pit latrines. While pit latrines are widely adopted due to their affordability, other solutions often face barriers due to high construction and maintenance costs.
Development Journey
2020 - The Innovation Beginning
The 1st Santech Hackathon was launched by Finish Mondial to foster innovations in sanitation system design and cost reduction.
Innovation Success
Opero-Services emerged victorious with their innovative vetiver latrine concept, replacing traditional pits with PVC barrels and Vetiver grass.
Pilot Implementation
A collaborative pilot project was established in Busia, Kenya, monitored for 6 months to evaluate performance.
The Vetiver Solution
The innovation derives its name from vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides) - a perennial bunchgrass native to India with remarkable "super absorbent" characteristics. This grass efficiently absorbs nutrients and heavy metals, making it perfect for treating wastewater.
Sato Pan
A specialized toilet pan with a mechanical seal that prevents the transmission of insects or gases, ensuring a hygienic environment.
Two-Barrel Septic System
Eliminates the need for a traditional septic tank by facilitating natural decomposition of solids while directing leachate to the vetiver bed.
Vetiver Bed
A lined bed planted with vetiver grass that naturally processes effluent, eliminating the need for additional treatment facilities.

Pilot Study Results
Cost-Effective Solution
Total construction cost: $185 (excluding superstructure), representing significant savings in both capital and operational expenses.
High Usability in Rural Settings
Perfect adaptation to rural environments with no reported issues regarding odor, maintenance, or excreta handling throughout the pilot period.
Environmental Protection
Significantly reduced risk of groundwater contamination, with improved leachate quality compared to traditional pit latrines.
2024 Commercialization Initiative
In partnership with the Western Kenya Sanitation Project, Opero Services is implementing a comprehensive rollout plan:
- ✓ Training local artisans in green latrine construction
- ✓ Establishing 4 demonstration sites
- ✓ Target: Minimum 40 vetiver green toilet installations
This collaboration marks a pivotal step towards product commercialization, validating both the product and business model.
